Bird Feeder: Seed Feeder

Feed the birds with a seed feeder

What You Need:

  • large plastic container with a lid
  • other plastic lid with a diameter larger than then container
  • yarn
  • mixed bird seed
  • knife
  • scissors
  • glue gun
  • hole punch or nail

How To Do It:

ADULT PREPARATION:
  1. Use the knife to make several holes in the side of the container towards the bottom.
  2. Use a glue gun to attach the bottom of the container to the larger lid so that the lip of the lid sticks up to act as a seed catcher.
  3. Use the scissors to cut a hole around the knife slits at the bottom of the container. The holes should be large enough for the birds to peck at the seed, but not so large that the seed falls out.
CHILD:
  1. Use the hole punch to make three evenly spaced sets of two side by side holes (six holes total) along the top edge of the container. If this is too difficult, have an adult punch the holes with a nail instead.
  2. Tie a piece of yarn through each set of holes. The yarn should be on the outside of the container so the lid will still snap on.
  3. Gather the yarn ends at the top with the feeder balanced and tie them in a knot.
  4. Fill the feeder with birdseed and snap the lid on.
  5. Hang your feeder outside. Try to hang your treats on a tree near a window so you can watch the birds enjoy their snacks.
