Editor's Review

NOTE: A couple of our testing units were defective right out of the box. But our testers with working units really enjoyed this activity. On the understanding that malfunctioning units would be returned and exchanged, our ratings are based on the testing experiences in homes where the units worked.

Tester Reviews

I had fun doing this acticity with my cousin (12 yrs). I loved how you could mix your own colours and make rainbow crayons or rings. I also like how you could draw with the ring you made. The only thing was there wasn't always enough melted wax to make all three crayons. One crayon usually was an odd shape because there wasn't enough wax to fill the mold. And sometimes when the crayons melted, the colours mixed too much. With practice, the colours of our crayons got better. Allison (F10)

I really like seeing how the wax melts and what the crayons will look like that I make. I like that the colours are all swirly. My crayons weren't always perfect, one broke cause there wasn't enough wax but that's OK, I just put it back in the melting pot and made another one! I like the rings, I can actually wear it...well I won't cause it's a ring but, I could. Oh and I Like that there is no aggravating noise. Sebastien (M11)

Nice activity, it's relaxing to see the crayons melt. the kids (M9, F10, M11) enjoyed making their crayons. they went all over the house looking for broken crayons. I never saw them so happy to find a stash of broken crayons! the crayons worked well, and they enjoyed seeing the process. there was no heat to burn yourself on. the exterior is cool and you can't open to top while the element is warm. I like the different options for the finished crayons, i.e. regular crayon shapes or crayon rings. It could be just the choice of colours, but everyone's [M10, M12 & M15] crayons seem to come out in basically muddy colours after the first couple of tries--you can see the different swirls of colour, but the basic "under colour" is a sort of brown. I haven't found any instructions for cleaning out the residue from previous uses (which I assume contributes to the muddiness). It's really cool to see the finished products, although there is a bit of a learning curve in terms of knowing how many crayon bits to put in the melter and keeping a eye on it to know when to pour into the molds. And we've finally found a use for all those broken crayons! Golda Wiseman

This is a great concept for an activity. Unfortunately our mleting plate did not heat up enough to melt the crayons so we could not complete the activities even after several attempts. It was very discouraging because the girls, age 6 and 10, were both excited to do this craft kit. Jennifer Kinsella

I don't think it worked properly - the shapes were off and the crayons didn't melt properly. Orietta Miranda
